The First National Soil Erosion Control
Demonstration Site
Coon Creek watershed is the site
of our nation's first soil conservation efforts. Many of the
practices started in 1933 are now a continuing hallmark of
sound agricultural methods. View a photo
essay of this conservation success story.
Coon Creek Revisited
A research project recently completed
by Martha Kelty Roldan, Saint Mary's University of Minnesota
graduate student, focuses on the effects of early conservation
efforts in the Coon Creek watershed. "Utilizing
a GIS for Mapping Reforestation of an Agricultural Landscape,
1939-1993" integrates valuable historical data with
the latest digital cartography.
